Two belts play a primary role in the operation of your engine and engine components – the timing belt and serpentine belts.
Depending on your vehicle, your engine is using a timing belt, timing chain, or cam belt to synchronize the rotation of its crankshaft and camshaft. If the timing belt is worn or broken, it will not properly open and close the engine’s valves during each cylinder’s intake and exhaust strokes; forcing the valves and pistons out of sync. If your engine suddenly begins to backfire or stop all together, your timing belt could be the problem.
Timing belts are often very difficult to visually inspect and thus are recommended to be replaced at intervals determined by the manufacturer. Most timing belts are recommended for replacement between 90,000 – 100,000 miles, but some vehicles as soon as 60,000!
The serpentine belt’s job is to transfer power from the crankshaft to components within your engine, including the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning, and water pump. Signs of a significantly worn serpentine belt include cracking, splitting, and squealing. If your serpentine belt breaks completely, you may experience loss of power steering, loss of your car’s charging system, or overheating of your engine.
REIS will inspect your serpentine belt as part of our inspection process and notify you when replacement is coming up. Schedule your auto maintenance appointment with Reis Automotive today!
